This blog documents my journey with the Diversity FLC at the University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash College.
- I joined the Diversity FLC because I am interested in how cultural competency, specifically cultural humility, can be used to improve relationships and experiences in health care and higher education.
- I'm thinking about how my research can share the voice of African American students in health care and their success stories.
- I hope that my research can help plan for improved support for African American students in health programs.

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is an assessment tool to help determine ones "orientations toward cultural difference and commonality". The assessment places one on the intercultural development continuum. The stages include denial, polarization, minimization, acceptance, and adaptation. Results provide both your perceived orientation (where you place yourself) and the development orientation (where you are as assessed by the IDI). The IDI is an interesting tool to allow for self reflection and to identify areas that you can grow more toward acceptance and adaptation.

Social constructions can be challenging when you don't know the rules. When one is new to a group, it can be difficult to know what actions or words will be acceptable or unacceptable. This can happen for new students, new faculty, those who are new to a school or neighborhood or country...anyone willing to enter a new social environment.
